Question!

... what do you do when you have been obsessed whit a pattern for days, even weeks? You buy it, draft it and cut it. But then it stoppes!... The pattern pieces lay there, untop of the intended fabric, and nothing happens. Nothing! For days and days.....
That is what has happened to me! I had my heart set on a very spoken-off pattern for my daughter, but then suddenly all my sewing-mojo for this dress were gone! Wanished in thin air.....

So my question to you guys is this;
In times like these, what do you do? Do you simply abandon the whole thing? Or do you push through it? Because in the very beginning the idea of the pattern and product was quite good, and the chance that the exitement will be back when you get startet are quite relative? Or is it just a waste of time and effort?

You see, my problem is that if I dont have fun while sewing, I get really upset. And things tend to go wrong whit everything! But on the other hand, the dress is in the back of my head everytime I enter my sewing room. It is giving me all kinds of guilty feelings, and I dont need that! I have enough on my plate!

So how would you approach this? Would you just continue and get done whit it? Do nothing and keep feeling the overwhelming guilt? Or are you actually able to forget all about it for as long as it is necessary, and continue when you are ready?

I think a big part of my problem is this: The "good girl"-syndrom! We all have it! The overwhelming feeling of having to please everyone all the time. To be honest, I`m not so good at it....
Right now I am torn beetween sewing what I really want, or finnish something I started....
I just wanna sew and be happy!

Where are you guys on this?

  1. Interesting question! I have limited sewing resources so I tend to mull over a prospective pattern for a really long time before investing in it. (I have a Pinterest board for listing potential patterns which I revisit and reedit constantly!) Maybe you could sew small steps for the dress alongside something you're more excited about making? I think though that if you haven't cut the fabric yet, then you're better off walking away from this project for the time being. Maybe you don't feel like making this kind of thing, maybe you'd prefer to work with a different fabric, maybe you just need a sewing break: whatever the reason, I think it's better to put a pattern aside than to feel obliged to make it and getting stressed.

    1. Many good points made here! I to tend to drag time along while thinking rather to buy a pattern or not. But very often I buy a pattern I have no intention for, just in case something should come up, and I would have use of it. My sewing resources are quite limited to, and therefor I often plan things down to every detail before I buy any material. I allso use a great lot of time at the internet looking for cheeper/cheepest fabric/notions of what I need, since fabric costs almost 3 times as what it would cost in the US or UK!

  2. First off, don't feel guilty! As you say, sewing is all about fun and if you're not feeling a project, don't force it. If you had cut out the pieces I would have suggested doing a little every day or so - that way you're making progress but it isn't dominating your thoughts or time. In the meantime, perhaps find another project or take a sewing break - we all need one every now and then to rejuvenate our creative streak.

    1. Thank you Claire! You know, I think the only reason I havent cut the pieces yet is because I deep down knew that I wouldnt finnish it... Probably my inner concius talking to me there...
      I am just going to do as mentioned and pack the pattern pieces away. And maybe see if there is any other interesting projects I could use the fabric for. It is quite lovely!

  3. ;) I have this at the moment - I've just tried to cleanse my palate with a new skirt & a new blouse & I feel more able to get back to it now ;) If it's a gift or something, the 'pushing through' with dedicated 20min sewing on it each day also helps minimise the guilt 'cause I'm doing something on it. But.... if it's not cut out yet, I'd also suggest just putting it away neatly & sewing something else until the motivation strikes again - much better than having it as a pile of cut pieces, part sewn & unable to be repurposed. I think it happens for everyone - and sewing is our hobby, we're not meant to resent it ;)

    1. Youre right! This is my hobby, and it should make me happy and content:D
      I am waiting for new fabric, and looking forward to making something for my self. Maybe that will help me out a little, and make me relax :D
